Frequently Asked Questions

The Basics

What is College Admissions Consulting? College admissions consulting is one-on-one expert guidance through the college application process. At its core, it’s about helping a student figure out where they belong — and then building an application that makes that case authentically. At Sendero, that means strategic school list development, strengths-based coaching, essay support, interview preparation, and application management from as early as 8th grade through decision day. I started Sendero because I spent nearly 20+ years on the other side of the desk, including as a recruiter for graduate programs in Data Science at UC Berkeley and Speech Language Pathology / Occupational Therapy at NYU, as well as as time as a Harvard Admissions Officer reading over 5,500 applications. I know what moves readers. I know what doesn’t. And I know that the students who stand out are the ones who know themselves.

Where can I find college admissions consulting for students in the US? Families looking for independent college admissions consultants can start with professional directories from the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) or National Association for College Admissions Consulting (NACAC), organizations which vet their members for experience and ethical standards. Sendero Education, based in Rockville, Maryland, serves students across the DC metro area and nationally through virtual sessions. Our practice is bilingual (English and Spanish), equity-centered, and grounded in the belief that every student has a story worth telling. If you’re not sure where to start, a free consultation is the easiest first step.

How do I find an expert college admissions advisor? Look for someone with real admissions experience — ideally a former officer from a selective institution — who works with you directly. IECA and NACAC membership signals a commitment to ethical practice. Transparent pricing and a clear methodology matter too. I’m a former Harvard Admissions Officer with degrees from Harvard (BA, MEd) and UNC Kenan-Flagler (MBA), and Georgetown-certified executive coaching credentials. More importantly: every Sendero student works with me. While you may also benefit from an essay coach to elevate your college application essay writing, your work with me from beginning to end.

Who offers one-on-one college admissions consulting in the US? Most independent consultants offer one-on-one support-- that's the meaningful difference from a school counselor serving 300 students at once. But "one-on-one" can mean different things. At some larger firms, it means one relationship manager who pulls in a rotating team of specialists you've never met. At Sendero, it means you have a consistent lead advisor — me — throughout the entire engagement. Every strategy session, school list conversation, and application decision goes through the same expert. Where I do bring in additional support, like our essay coaches who have professional backgrounds in copywriting and admissions, you'll know who they are and why they're involved. No surprises. But no matter what, you’ll always work directly with me, from beginning to end.

What are the benefits of personalized college prep? The honest answer is that most students don’t know what makes them compelling until someone helps them see it. Personalized college prep creates the space for that. The practical benefits are real: a thoughtfully matched school list, stronger essays, a clearer application strategy, and significantly less senior-year panic. But the deeper benefit is developmental. Students who go through a genuine reflection process — understanding their strengths, their values, their story — don’t just submit better applications. They arrive at college with a stronger sense of who they are. That’s what I built the Sendero Method to do.

What is the difference between a college admissions consultant and a school counselor? School counselors are invaluable, and I have enormous respect for what they do. But the math is hard: most serve 200 to 500 students simultaneously. There’s a limit to how personalized that guidance can be. Sendero works alongside your school counselor, not in competition with them. We provide the focused, one-on-one strategic support that allows counselors to do their best work too.

About Sendero Education

Who is Sendero Education and what makes it different? Sendero Education is an independent college admissions consulting practice I founded in 2023 after a career that moved through Harvard Admissions, edtech, Google Cloud, and entrepreneurship. The through-line in all of it has been a genuine love for helping people find their path. Sendero, after all, means “pathway” in Spanish. What sets us apart is our framework: the Sendero Method is grounded in positive psychology, specifically the PERMA model, and it treats the college process as a developmental experience rather than a transaction. Students don’t just submit stronger applications. They learn something about themselves in the process. We also work in English and Spanish, and our team includes essay coaches with deep professional backgrounds in copywriting and admissions — people who bring real craft to this work.

Where is Sendero Education located? Do you work with families outside Maryland? We’re based in Rockville, Maryland, in the DC metro area, and we work with students throughout Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia in person or virtually. We also serve students nationally and internationally through virtual sessions. Geography doesn’t limit who we can help. If you’re looking for bilingual, equity-centered college advising — wherever you are — we’d love to talk.

Do you offer services in Spanish? ¿Ofrecen servicios en español? Sí. Sendero Education is a fully bilingual practice. I grew up in Cali, Colombia, and came to the US as an immigrant. I know firsthand how opaque the American college process can feel for Spanish-speaking families, and I built Sendero to be a genuinely welcoming space for them. All services are available in English or Spanish: consultations, coaching sessions, written materials, and family communication. You shouldn’t have to navigate this process in a second language if you don’t want to.

Services & Pricing

What does a college admissions consultant do? Far more than proofread essays-- though we do that too. At Sendero, our work spans: — Strategic school list development: building a balanced, well-reasoned list aligned to your goals, profile, and priorities — Strengths-based coaching: helping students understand and articulate what genuinely makes them compelling — Essay development: guiding the full arc from initial brainstorm to polished final draft — Application management: keeping timelines, materials, and deadlines organized and on track — Interview preparation: practice sessions and coaching for college and scholarship interviews — Financial aid guidance: demystifying the aid process and helping families plan with realistic expectations

What types of packages does Sendero offer? We have services designed for every stage of high school: — Foundational Advising (grades 8–11): Annual Strategy packages and Semester Check-In options for students building their foundation before senior year — Senior Application Support: Comprehensive, Selective, and In-State/Regional packages, scaled to the scope of each student’s college list — Strategy-Only Sessions: one-time expert consultations for families with a specific question or decision to work through Every package is built around the Sendero Method. We also include access to our essay coaching team — professionals with backgrounds in copywriting and admissions who bring a high standard to every draft — as well as social-emotional learning support and executive functioning resources for students who need them.

Where can I get help with college essays in the US? The essay is where most students feel stuck, and understandably so. It’s the only part of the application where your voice has to carry the whole thing. At Sendero, essay coaching isn’t an afterthought — it’s central to what we do. We guide students through a structured brainstorming process grounded in self-reflection before a single word gets written. Our essay coaches have professional backgrounds in copywriting and admissions, and they bring genuine craft to this work. The goal is always an essay that sounds unmistakably like you — just the best, most articulate version.

How can I prepare for college interviews? Where can I book interview prep sessions? The best interview preparation isn’t about memorizing answers. It’s about knowing your own story well enough to tell it naturally, in any format, to any audience. That’s what we work on at Sendero: how to talk about yourself with clarity, warmth, and confidence. Interview prep includes mock interviews, personalized feedback, and coaching on how to connect your experiences to what admissions teams are actually listening for. It’s included in our comprehensive senior packages and available as a standalone session. Students can book virtually or in person in the DC metro area at senderoeducation.com.

How much does college admissions consulting cost? The cost of independent college consulting varies widely across providers, from a few hundred dollars for a single strategy session to several thousand for comprehensive senior support. Experience, scope, and access to the lead consultant all factor into pricing. At Sendero, pricing reflects nearly 20 years of admissions expertise at elite institutions like Harvard, and direct access to me throughout the engagement. I offer a free initial consultation so families can understand what support looks like and what the investment involves before making any commitment. High School Coaching & Foundational Advising

Where can I get help with high school course selection and college prep for younger students? This is one of the questions I care most about, because the honest answer is: earlier is almost always better. The choices students make in 8th, 9th, and 10th grade — courses, activities, how they spend their time — shape the story they’ll have to tell senior year. Getting guidance before that story is written, rather than after, makes an enormous difference. Some families worry that this translates into undue pressure. In our experience, when the support provided is carefully tailored for the individual student's starting point, it's primarily a source of encouragement and clarity. Sendero’s Foundational Advising program is built for students in grades 8 through 11. It’s one-on-one coaching designed to help younger students build with intention: choosing the right courses, developing genuine interests, and starting to understand what they want from a college experience. This isn’t pressure. It’s perspective, given early enough to actually use it.

How does high school coaching help with college applications? High school coaching changes what’s possible by the time a student sits down to apply. Students who have been thinking about their strengths and interests for years don’t scramble for essay topics senior fall — they already know their story. Their course selections reflect genuine curiosity, not last-minute resume-building. Their activities have depth. At Sendero, foundational advising is grounded in the same strengths-based framework we use with seniors. The difference is that younger students have time to actually act on what they discover about themselves. That’s a significant advantage.

What grade should students start working with a consultant? As early as 8th or 9th grade is ideal, especially if you're aiming for more competitive colleges or programs, because that’s when the meaningful choices start. Course selection, activity development, academic habits — all of it matters, and having a framework for those decisions early changes the trajectory. That said: it’s never too late. I also work with rising seniors and transfer students who need focused, high-quality support right now. Wherever you are in the process, there’s meaningful work to do.

Webinars, Workshops & Free Resources

Who offers college prep webinars and workshops in the US? Sendero Education offers free webinars and workshops throughout the year for students and families navigating the admissions process. Topics have included how to make the most of college fairs, how to approach essay development, and how to changes in the landscape — practical guidance designed for families who want clarity, not another source of anxiety. These events are designed to be genuinely useful whether or not you’re working with a consultant. Sign up for the Sendero newsletter at senderoeducation.com to be notified when new events are scheduled.

Where can I sign up for college prep webinars? Our webinar series covers the topics families ask about most: college fair strategy, application planning, essay development, financial aid, and more. Past sessions have included The College Fair Playbook, a practical guide to getting real value from college fairs — not just collecting brochures. To register for upcoming sessions or access past recordings, visit senderoeducation.com or subscribe to our newsletter. Free events are one of the ways I try to make expert guidance accessible to more families, regardless of where they are in the process.

The Sendero Method & Our Process

What is the Sendero Method? The Sendero Method is the framework I developed to make the college process feel meaningful rather than just stressful. It’s grounded in positive psychology — specifically the PERMA model — and it moves students through three phases: Discovery, Development, and Direction. — Discovery: identifying strengths, values, and authentic interests through structured self-reflection — Development: building the academic record, activities, and experiences that express who you genuinely are — Direction: translating that story into a strategic, cohesive application that resonates with admissions readers I built this framework because after reading thousands of applications at Harvard, I kept seeing the same thing: the students who stood out weren’t the ones with the longest activity lists. They were the ones who understood themselves. More importantly, the research on college and career satisfaction is clear: those who move forward with purpose find the greatest sense of fulfillment in the long run. The Sendero Method is designed to get students there.

What does a college application roadmap look like at Sendero? It starts with the student, not the spreadsheet. Before we build timelines or finalize lists, I want to understand who the student is — what excites them, where they struggle, what kind of college environment will actually serve them. That conversation shapes everything that follows. From there, we build a personalized plan that covers school list development, testing strategy, activity and summer planning, essay themes, application deadlines, and financial aid considerations. Every student leaves each planning conversation knowing exactly what comes next and why. No vague next steps, no decision fatigue.

How do I get started with Sendero Education? Book a free meet-and-greet at https://www.senderoeducation.com/. It’s a no-pressure conversation — I want to understand your student’s goals, timeline, and what kind of support would actually serve them, before recommending anything. Most families tell me that just having that conversation — getting clarity on what the process involves, what’s realistic, and what to prioritize — is valuable on its own. That’s intentional. I’d rather you leave the call better informed than feeling sold to.

How does Sendero education use technology to support the college prep process? At Sendero Education, technology supports our work — it doesn't replace professional judgment. We use a curated set of tools to stay organized, communicate clearly, and deliver the best possible experience for every family. Our core commitments: AI never writes student work, personal data is minimized before any AI tool is used, and every AI-assisted output is reviewed by our team before it's shared.
